Working on the Lantern Land and Gardens

Working on the land and gardens at Lantern Community

The Land is a large and very varied workshop with jobs suitable for all abilities. There are 10 acres of land and gardens to care for and a further 5 acres of common land that we maintain.

Our large community garden includes a willow maze with our 2000 willow plants and an amphitheatre for outdoor productions. There are streams, ditches, flowerbeds and specimen trees all linked by a network of paths whcih we encourage the wider community to enjoy. Next to the Community Garden is our duck pond and chicken field where we produce free range eggs.

Much of our estate work is seasonal with grass cutting, hedge trimming and weeding predominantly in the summer and road sweeping and leaf collections in the winter. All the leaves collected from our site are composited into leaf mould. We also compost all brown cardboard as well as garden and kitchen waste. Our compost heaps are treated with biodynamic preparation. A combination of leaf mould and compost is seived and used in potted plant production on our nursery.

The land workshop is also responsible for recycing the paper, coloured card, glass, tins, and plastic generated by our community. This is sorted and taken offsite to the relevant agencies.
